VEHICLE / OWNER COMMENTS |
My first 72
Sprint convertible #272 had suffered the fate of many daily
driver cars of the 1970's and had a fair amount of rust when I
purchased it in 1985. I was able to cosmetically turn it back
into what it looked like when it rolled off the Dearborn
Michigan assembly line in March 1972. However, I did not have a
garage to store it so regrettably I sold it but I met another
owner (Lacy Hagood) whose sprint was in much better condition
than mine. I did not think 18 years would pass between owning my
first and second one but it was worth the long wait. By 2003 the
car I had seen 18 years earlier had not been driven in about ten
years but I got it running and struck a deal to buy it and I
drove it home. Over the next year I replaced such items as the
radiator, heater core, brakes, water pump and other mechanical
parts. The carpet had faded so it was taken out and replaced
which brightened up the interior. Despite having over 90,000
miles on the car it was in remarkably excellent original
condition. Since buying the car over 12,000 miles on it
including trips to New York, Ohio and Tennessee. By this time I
had been keeping in touch several other sprint convertibles
owners to let them know about my recent purchase.
My car was sold by Dick Herriman Ford in Vienna, Virginia. I was
amazed this car had zero rust in any of the typical places given
the miles on it. All it took was some cosmetic freshening up and
some minor bodywork to repair a small dent in the rear fender
lip. The sprint took first place in its first Carlisle All Ford
show and this year was in the Invitational display. Since the
car is in basically unrestored condition it is quite remarkable
that it can compete with restored cars. It made the eleven hour
trip to Nashville Tennessee and back for the Mustang 40th
Anniversary just fine. I continue to drive my sprint year round
and in about ten parades a year from February to November
including the annual Washington DC Cherry Blossom parade which
my car drove in in April 1972. For lots of parade pictures see
